Lorraine discusses why it is important for women to regularly test themselves for HIV/AIDS.

Lorraine:
HIV testing is not something that’s normally done. It’s not done in screening in physicals and it’s not done when women are pregnant. And I think the most valuable tool that women can get out of this is that, it’s okay to ask for an HIV test because whether or not you think that, “Well, I just don’t want to know because it’s scary to know.”

It does two things–it makes you more aware of hey, that I am either not at risk and now what I need to do is make better choices so that I don’t become infected, or two, if I am at that risk, if I am positive, I don’t infect others, like my own child or someone else that you care about because the statistics are 40,000 or more people become HIV test, test positive every year, and that’s because people don’t know.

People are afraid to get this test, and the thing is that, people should not be afraid especially women, and especially women who want to have children. I mean, because women who are HIV positive can have babies and not pass this disease to their babies, but them not knowing is less likely that chance of passing it to the babies.

The best thing to do is to post HIVtest.org and than what you do in your area is put in the city, the state, and you can find locations on where to get a free HIV test.
