Nurse Dougherty:
I’m Jan Dougherty. I am a registered nurse with a Master’s degree in gerontological nursing. I am the Director of Family and Community Services at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute.
Well I began by defining, first of all, the category of diseases that fall under dementia meaning problems with memory and thinking and other aspects of the brain, which might include language, navigating in familiar places become more difficult and everyday living becomes impacted.
Alzheimer’s disease is one type of dementia, but probably impacting upwards of 60 to 80% of all of those individuals who have dementia.
