Sonja shares how she confronts frustrating communication problems with her father who has Alzheimer's disease.
Sonja:
I think I am much more patient now than I was before. One of the things that I would like to, a couple of things that I’d like for people that are listening to this to know, they're probably like I was. I wasn’t sure how to even talk to him about what was going on. He would say he was losing his mind and we would say, “Oh, Dad, you’re not losing your mind.” I mean, just all the frustrations he was feeling, and I wasn’t sure what to say to him.
And someone along the way just said just to be honest, just to talk to him like you would talk to him. “You know, Dad, you’re not losing your mind. You have got a brain disease. You just are not remembering like you used to be able to, and it’s just like being a diabetic, or it’s like being something else. You have no control over it, and that’s why we need to get you the help that’s out there.”
And so I just talked to him honestly, but simply, and tried to reassure him that there’s nothing that he can help with what he is going through.
