Dr. Steinmann shares if shoulder arthritis is a fatal diagnosis.

Dr. Steinmann:
Only in the odd chance that you have significant arthritis and you have an activity such as mountain climbing or scuba diving and you can’t get to your regulator or you are making a move and your arm freezes up because of the arthritis. I think you need to look at your avocations mainly but no, there’s no fatality associated with arthritis of the upper extremity or even the lower extremity itself.

Dr. Scott P. Steinmann, M.D., is on orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center in Minnesota. Dr. Steinmann received his medical training from Cornell University Medical College in New York, completed his residency in orthopedics at New York Orthopedic Hospital and completed a fellowships focusing on the shoulder and hand surgery from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine respectively.
