Acupuncture May Help Asthmatics Breathe Easier

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a different approach to asthma than Western medicine does. Asthma is treated as a disorder of the kidneys and stomach along with the lungs so acupoints for this condition are along the lung, kidney and stomach meridians. And acupoints along the bladder meridian are also used since traditional Chinese medicine views the bladder as integral to the body's health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) deems acupuncture to be a viable treatment for asthma, and a study by the University of Vienna Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care has found that 70 percent or more of patients treated for asthma with acupuncture see improvement.

"While asthma symptoms can range from very slight to severe depending on the individual, there are several medical treatment options available for patients suffering from asthma. In addition to conventional medical modalities, acupuncture and other alternative therapies are becoming increasingly popular today as effective means for treating chronic conditions including asthma."
