Dr. Mathias Fobi shares the advice he provides his bariatric surgery patients.

Dr. Fobi:
You have the surgery. You decided to lose weight. You can follow our instructions or beat the operation. So we tell them to make sure you don’t gain weight. Sit down for a meal for at least 25 minutes; you cannot eat on the run. Allocate 25 minutes for your breakfast, 25 minutes for your lunch and 25 minutes for dinner. Eat at least three meals a day and don’t eat between meals.

We do not tell you what type of food to eat. That’s what differentiates surgery from diets. Diets tell you not to eat this, not to eat this, not to eat this. The calories don’t matter what it is, calories are calories. It’s like a dollar can come in one bill, ten-ten cent pieces or four-quarters or hundred pennies – it’s still a dollar. So the way we tell the patients is the quantity you eat.

So, you can have a cheesecake if you want to, but you can only eat a small quantity. You can eat stake if you want to, but you can only eat a small quantity. You can eat vegetables you want to, but just a small quantity. So we stress the fact that the quantity you eat ends up determining the amount of calories you take and therefore ends up helping you to lose the weight and maintaining it.
