Dr. David Podkameni introduces himself and shares whether he recommends one bariatric surgery solution over another. Dr. Podkameni specializes in bariatric and general surgery at Banner Gateway Bariatric Center in Gilbert, Arizona.

Dr. Podkameni:
My name is David Podkameni. I am the Medical Director for Banner Gateway Bariatric Program. We serve the area of the east valley in Phoenix and it’s basically Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek and the whole east valley of Phoenix. Our interest here is mainly bariatric surgery from our program, from our standpoint, and we treat adults and adolescence for obesity.

There is no official recommendation for any type of bariatric surgery as we know, but there are some centers doing bands, some centers doing gastric bypass, and some centers starting to do sleeve gastrectomies, and in our view here, one of the promising prospects of having a sleeve gastrectomy is that you are not any burning any bridges to other procedures.

You can always, in the future if there is any type of increase in weight gain, you can change this patient to a gastric bypass or a band. There is no foreign body involved like with the band. So, we think it’s extremely advantageous having a sleeve gastrectomy as opposed to a gastric bypass, which will reroute the intestines and creates some more malabsorption, or having a foreign body involved where you have a band being placed.
