Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss: How Much Do Patients Typically Lose? - Dr. Johnell

Rate This

Dr. Johnell discusses how much weight a bariatric patient typically loses. Dr. Johnell is an advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgeon.

Dr. Johnell:
In terms of weight loss, the great thing about the band is that the weight loss is gradual and not extremely rapid initially like it is with other operations like the gastric bypass or the biliopancreatic diversion.

Initially patients wondered if that was a good thing, but I think most realize that that is optimal in that it provides the patient’s body to adjust to that gradual weight loss.

In terms of weight loss, during the first year we usually expect to see 30 to 50 percent excess body weight lost in the first year.

By the second year we will often see 50 to 70 percent excess body weight loss.

The great thing about the band however is that the weight loss can continue or can adjust to what each individual patient wants.

Some patients don’t want to lose weight very rapidly; some patients do and we can adjust the band so that each individual can have the weight loss that they would rather have.
