Dr. Johnell:
At the patient’s initial consultation I usually decide along with the patient what kind of tests and procedures we need to do to be able to give them an operation that’s as safe as possible.

That usually includes preoperative blood tests, lab tests and also includes a sleep test to rule out sleep apnea.

Depending upon their cardiac history we may get a cardiac clearance that could be done either by their doctor or by our cardiologists.

Additionally, we ask the patient to meet with our registered dietician for a preoperative nutritional evaluation.

And we also ask them to meet with our psychologist for a behavioral evaluation so that we can assure that they have as good and as high quality outcome as possible.

Additionally, we do require patients to attend a full day pre-op class that includes a lot of information about their operation and about what the patients are going to be experiencing preoperatively and in the hospital and then post operatively.

We give patients a large volume of text in the form of lose leaf that essentially becomes their bible for their bariatric surgical experience.

And everything that we teach them preoperatively and all the experiences that they have post operatively are going to be included in this book that we give them after their initial consultation.
