Dr. Mathias Fobi shares why patients should have their bariatric procedure performed at a hospital rather than a surgicenter.

Dr. Fobi:
Where you have the surgery depends on a lot of factors. The LAP-BAND® is a simple procedure that can be done at a surgicenter. It’s a day surgery that can be done. The gastric bypass, the sleeve gastrectomy, the biliopancreatic bypass, I recommend that they be done at a hospital.

Overall, I think it is better to do surgeries at a hospital than at a surgicenter because of the back up. At the time of surgery anything can happen. It is nice to do in a hospital where you have the experts; the lung specialists, the pulmonary sub-specialists available in case of the complications that can occur.

Weight loss surgery is major surgery. The LAP-BAND® might be a simple operation, but complications can occur. Well, you’ve heard the stories about surgicenters, when there’s a complication you have to call an ambulance, load up the patient and move him to a hospital. That time difference can be the difference between life and death. So, I am not against surgicenters, but I am just saying, if I had my choice, I will have these operations at a hospital than a surgicenter.
