Gastric Bands: Which Ones Are Available For Patients? - Dr. Liu (VIDEO)

Dr. Liu:
Patients can have a choice of different types of bands. There are the LAP-BAND® from Allergan and then there’s a REALIZE® Band from Johnson & Johnson and a separate band, here is, this is very similar. It is the REALIZE® Band and it has a balloon as well on the inside of the band and it has a little access port.

These bands themselves have a little port, which I will be implanting, usually hiding it somewhere around the belly button. And this is implanted so that I can access this in the clinic during the routine clinic visit. And we inject IV fluid that allows the adjustments of these bands so that it is comfortable for the patient and we have a good rate of weight loss during the postoperative phase.

About Dr. Carson Liu, M.D., F.A.C.S.:
Dr. Liu received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his internship, residencies and research fellowship at UCLA Medical Center. In 1998, Dr. Liu was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCLA Medical School where he continued to hone his skills in clinical practice, teaching and research. Dr. Liu has conducted extensive research and is widely published in the fields of Bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery; he is nationally recognized in his field and has lectured extensively to professional societies on these subjects. Dr. Liu is board certified in General Surgery and over the course of his career has performed more than 2600 bariatric surgeries.
