Dr. Carson Liu recalls the nutrients a gastric bypass patients will have trouble absorbing.

Dr. Liu:
Gastric bypass patients really don’t malabsorb nutrients. They are going to absorb every calorie that the person swallows with the gastric bypass. They only malabsorb certain vitamins and minerals. So it’s going to be mainly vitamin B12, because we’re bypassing the stomach and the stomach plays a big role in helping our bodies absorb vitamin B12. And they malabsorb iron and calcium mainly because iron and calcium absorbed from the acid environment and from the front part of the small intestine, which we bypass.

So those are the three things we know that the patients have to supplement in order to make up for that deficiency. But in terms of calorie or amino acid or protein, patients absorb all of that, all of which they actually chew and swallow, will be absorbed. And that’s one thing that patients need to remember is that, every calorie that is swallowed will be absorbed in the gastric bypass procedure.
