Dr. Liu:

It’s mainly because the stomach, which is not portrayed well in this model here, has a lot of fat on the outside of the stomach. There’s a lot of fat within the stomach wall so that when the patient loses weight, and they are getting thinner on the outside, the stomach walls getting thinner on the inside as the fat is being metabolized, is being burned off. And in doing so, the food is going to drop through faster.

What we need to do is tighten up this balloon on the inside of the band to continue the same type of slowing down on the food to make you feel full faster. So this is why it’s important to get the band adjusted as you lose 30 or 40 pounds so that we can continue the weight loss.

Once we lose that restrictive process, in this area, we don’t slow down the food as fast as we were before and people tend to not lose anymore weight. Most people come in for about two to four adjustments the first year, on average.
