LAP-BAND®, What Does This Procedure Entail? - Dr. Liu (VIDEO)

Hi, I am Dr. Carson Liu. I am a bariatric surgeon. I specialize in advanced laparoscopic surgery and I am located here in Westwood, Los Angeles, California and our practice specializes solely in weight loss procedures.

It’s basically a adjustable gastric band we place at the very top of the stomach. And what it does Is, it allows you to process the food in a similar manner, but you will feel full faster with a much less volume than normal. The band is implanted around the top of the stomach and when the top of the stomach is stretched out with food, it sends a signal to your brain saying that you are full.

So what we do here is implant this. It takes about 30 minutes of surgery and, at most, an overnight stay, but most people go home the same day. And you are on your way to losing weight once we have this implanted. It’s pretty much a very, very safe procedure. It’s probably the safest procedure out there and the risks are very, very low for complications.

About Dr. Carson Liu, M.D., F.A.C.S.:
Dr. Liu received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his internship, residencies and research fellowship at UCLA Medical Center. In 1998, Dr. Liu was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCLA Medical School where he continued to hone his skills in clinical practice, teaching and research. Dr. Liu has conducted extensive research and is widely published in the fields of Bariatric and gastrointestinal surgery; he is nationally recognized in his field and has lectured extensively to professional societies on these subjects. Dr. Liu is board certified in General Surgery and over the course of his career has performed more than 2600 bariatric surgeries.
