Dr. Mathias Fobi describes his experience treating celebrities undergoing bariatric surgery and shares his motivation to care for obese patients.

Dr. Fobi:
The name ‘Surgeons of the Stars’ is just because I happen to be in Los Angeles and I happen to have a lot of celebrities who had a weight problem that ended up coming to me at the time when I was there and they are happy with my results; some of them had me on the television show like Roseanne, and a few others and it gives you a sense of satisfaction. That is probably why I got a lot of publicity because you know, you get on the plane and discovery channel comes on and there you are talking about weight loss surgery.

So it makes you feel good, but I don’t think that gives me as much satisfaction as seeing a young man who was about 700 pounds, who did not have a life, who thought they were dying and was in Medicare where they were receiving like $400.00 a month, and I have gotten that patient now to 220 pounds. The patient now is gainly employed; pays more taxes now from the income than they were getting from social security – that gives me a satisfaction of contributing to the welfare of the human beings and that’s what motivates me in this field of bariatric surgery.
