Vanessa introduces herself and shares why she decided to have gastric bypass surgery.

Vanessa:
I am Vanessa. I am 25 years old. I had a gastric bypass 7 months ago and I would like to share my story with you.

I gained a lot of weight after high school, and I just had every, I don’t know how to explain, I had done everything. I had done every single diet, every single pill, everything you could imagine of doing; craziest things, you know? And I remember one day, me and my mom were sitting, just like thinking, “What can we do now,” because my mom is in the same boat, and she is like, “Have you ever thought about having surgery?” And I was like, “You know, surgery, that’s just like for somebody like that has to be extremely big.” And I never considered that, and then I just had so many health issues.

I was already diabetic. I am only 25 years old, you know, and that’s scary. I had a lot of problems, you know, with my menstrual cycle. My gynecologist had already told me I was probably not going to be able to have kids, you know, like that, and that hurts you. Like you are only 25. I had not even considered marriage and they’re already telling me I can’t have children.

So I, you know, did some research and found Miami Hope. I read, I went to the info sessions, and I was just gung-ho about it. I was like, “Yes, I am going to do it.” You know, there’s a stigma behind gastric bypass and like bariatric surgeries, and I think that once I did my research I wasn’t like as scared, and that’s why I was just all about it, you know?
