Dr. Dahiya:
Sleeve is a newer procedure coming out, and there are several reasons that it’s good for somebody who is extremely high risk or somebody who might have other risks where we don’t want to take any risk at all of the vitamins or any medication not being absorbed.
What I personally may do it is that, you know, I make a tube of the stomach. Sometime we take out rest of the most of the stomach, sometime I just leave it, but basically it’s a tube. Again, there’s no bypass of the route of the food. Food goes the same way, goes into the stomach, and goes the same way, but as opposed to being, like, you know, this big, it’s just a sleeve, but it opens the same natural passage same way, and again, it forces you to eat smaller amounts. You lose weight.
Sometime it comes out as a staging procedure also. If you are, let’s say, one gentleman I had, the weight was so much, he also had congestive failure, heart trouble. So, bypass would have been too much of a procedure so sleeve fitted him well. So there are some special indications for it.
