What Is Bariatric Surgery? - Dr. Hajduczek (VIDEO)

Dr. Hajduczek:

Hi, my name is Andrew Hajduczek and I am a bariatric surgeon. I am board-certified general surgeon and Fellow of American College of Surgeons. I am also a regular member of American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.

I started doing bariatric surgery first in association with most experienced surgeon around ‘96 and gradually it evolved into my main specialty, which it is now for quite, quite a few years.

Bariatric’s name evolves from Greek Baros, which is weight, and Iatros, which is physician or doctor. So basically it’s medical management of excess weight and that started in early 60s and over decades evolved with several procedures.

Right now it’s the most popular procedures in U.S., as well as all over the world, are ROUX-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric bands, which is LAP-BAND® and REALIZE™ Band, and for last few years, vertical sleeve gastrectomy. There are a few other procedures that are not as commonly used.

Dr. Andrew Hajduczek was born and raised in Poland where he graduated from The Silesian Medical Academy and finished internship and surgical training (5 years). After immigrating to the United States, he completed internship and the surgical residency program at UCI Medical Center in Orange, CA and started in busy private practice in the South Bay area in 1988. The scope of his practice included all aspects of general surgery (including laparoscopic – since 1990) as well as vascular and thoracic surgery. He served as Chief of Surgery in three hospitals (double terms after first being a Vice Chief there).
