Beauty Supplements: Creating Beauty Based on Science

What are Beauty Supplements?

For years women have created beauty routines through skincare, makeup application, hair treatment, eating healthy foods and other procedures. Now many companies say women can attain beauty by consuming pills, drinks and other supplement forms. In recent years beauty supplements and vitamins have become a multimillion dollar industry throughout the world. According to Datamonitor, revenue of the beauty supplement market increased by $900 million dollars between 2008 and 2010. Varieties of supplements exist on the market that claim results ranging from longer and better quality beauty sleep, radiant skin, weight loss, and healthier hair, nails and teeth. Many dermatologists and other skincare experts see a scientific connection to beauty supplements and vitamins as they work from the inside of your body out. PS Productions/PhotoSpin

Vitamins A, C and E: Produce Radiant Skin

The ingredients that make up beauty supplements and vitamins cause various skin, weight, hair and nail improvements. Vitamins A, C and E are a common ingredient found in most supplements. The vitamins are also found in many skin products because they help nourish skin and fight aging. According to Dr. Charles Lynde, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Toronto, the beauty supplements “work from the inside to try to provide a proper environment in you body, to try to set the stage to be healthy.” Vitamins A, C and E function inside the body to produce a glowing complexion while also building collagen that firms skin and maintains youthful skin. Vitamin B: Stronger Hair and Nails

Vitamin B is a primary ingredient found in supplements that strengthen hair and nails. According to marieclaire.com, brittle hair and nails are typical among people lacking vitamin B. The nutrients of vitamin B work inside the body to produce shinier and healthier tresses as well as more solid nails that do not chip as easily. Photo: Getty Images

Zinc: Clears Acne and Other Skin Breakouts

Zinc can be found in beauty supplements that reduce skin breakouts. The ingredient controls oily skin. Especially for extra oily complexions, zinc regulates oil production, which in effect can help cure acne and other skin flareups. Zinc can also improve other skin disorders such as eczema which is often caused by zinc deficiency. Photo: Getty Images

Beauty Supplement Controversy

Although most beauty supplements and vitamins are composed of natural ingredients and many users have experienced positive results, controversy also surrounds them. Many health experts suggest that maintaining a healthy diet is the best way to achieve a clear complexion, a slim figure and strong hair and nails. Beautyvitamins.co.uk said, “Although [supplements] can be effective to a certain degree, there is little point in adding beauty vitamins to your beauty routine if you don’t make the necessary diet and lifestyle changes to go along with them.” Beauty supplements and vitamins can not be depended on to the point where healthy eating, exercise and skincare practices are replaced by them. Cost of Beauty Supplements

Most supplement products cost anywhere between $20 to $150 for supplies ranging from a specific amount of days to months. Because products are pricey, consumers should consider researching different products, be willing to make an investment and decide what area they want their supplement to aid. The human body already has many vitamins and minerals and also consumes more through healthy eating. Beauty supplements may make a difference for some, but Joyce Fox, M.D., a Cedars-Sinai Medical Group dermatologist, said they can be a waste of money because most people are not lacking in vitamins to the point where their skin or hair is impacted. Common Beauty Supplement Brands

Beauty supplements exist in forms ranging from drinks, powders, pills, gels, food and crystals. Some popular brands include Glowelle, Sensa Weight-Loss System, FunctionLab Active Mix & Nutrient Tonics, Glisodin, Kinerase and Beauty Scoop. Each product performs a different function and treats varying areas so it is important to research before purchasing a supplement. Medical experts also suggest discussing the supplement with your doctor before consuming it regularly.
