What Is A Mastopexy? - Dr. Shaw (VIDEO)

Dr. Shaw:

A mastopexy, or breast lift, is a reshaping of the breast. Sometimes after childbearing, or over time with gravity, the breast has a lower position and augmentation alone isn’t enough. So, an old adage I have is, “Don’t augment a breast you don’t like.” So if the breast is lower than you like, you want to create the breast that you want and augment that breast.

The breast lift itself or, a mastopexy, does create scares on the breast, which you should be aware of, and one would be around the areola, a lined down the front, and the incision under the breast.

On first blush these scars are something that patients might say, “Well I don’t really want a scar on my breast,” but when you see the gains of the new shape and with the augmented size these scars kind of take a backseat. There is many patients that we’ll see that will say they never thought their breast could look like this again and oftentimes there can be tears in the exam room after surgery because the results are far beyond the patient’s expectations.
