Dr. O'Connor:
Most orthopedic surgeons do less invasive approaches for hip replacement surgery now, but the length of the scar will depend on basically how big the patient is because people that are heavier are going to have a bigger scar than people who are skinny.

Dr. Mary O'Connor, M.D., was accepted as a resident in orthopedic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, New York in 1985. She joined the orthopedic surgery staff at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida in 1991, and since 2005 has served as department chair.
