Patients who come in seeking a hip replacement in my office often ask, “How long will their hip replacement last?” If you are 80 years old it’s a lifetime. The average hip replacement we think lasts 15 to 20 years. We’ve done a very good job in Europe and in the United States making these last a lifetime.
However, if you are 50-years-old, you should count on getting a redo hip replacement sometime in your lifetime. The newer bearing surfaces may prove that we can increase that lifespan of the hip to 30-40 years, but I won’t know for 30 to 40 years so ask me then; hopefully I’ll still be in practice.

Audrey Tsao received her engineering degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She attended medical school at Cornell University and completed her orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. She returned to Johns Hopkins University to complete a fellowship in Arthritis and Adult reconstruction surgery.

I'm 61 years old. I'm hoping my new right hip lasts at least 15 years! I asked my financial advisor to keep me comfortable for the same amount of time! Guess we'll have to see!
