Dr. Tsao:
Often patients ask me for pointers on how to improve the outcome of their hip replacement surgery and tips in healing quicker. I think one of the best tips you can have is to prepare for your surgery. That includes things like losing weight and getting on a diet before your surgery, making sure that you’re in good health by checking your heart, your lungs, your abdomen, your GI tract; making sure that everything is in working order. I think that doing preoperative exercises to make sure that your hip is strong, your muscle strength is good, especially if you can do them in the water I think is very effective in combating any weakness after surgery.

And lastly I think becoming educated in what you’re about to have done. The surgical procedure itself, ask questions, understand what is involved, what you need to prepare for, getting physical therapy, preparing your home, getting food in the refrigerator and the freezer.

The second thing I’d highly recommend doing is working with your orthopedic team. Your orthopedic team is not only you, but your family, as well as your physical therapist, your nurses, your doctors, and your pharmacists and any transportation method you might have available to get back and forth from all those appointments.

By working together as a team and being proactive on it I think that you can get a much better outcome. Your frustration level is less. Your unknown factors are taken care of. Your ability to focus on you doing your recuperation in your activity level I think is the absolute most important thing and you won’t become un-focused because you’re busy trying to do other things.

And the last tip I would highly recommend is be inquisitive and ask questions. If you have a problem, ask. I don’t prefer being woken up at 2 o’clock in the morning for a question that you might have because you’re awake, but I do recommend calling your doctor or your therapist or your nurse with any questions that you have regarding more drainage, questions about feeling unusual in the hip, something that’s changed, medication issues – do all of those things and you will have a great outcome for your hip replacement.

I think that because I watched my weight, and did preoperative exercises before surgery both in and out of the gym,I have been having a very successful recuperation. My right hip was replaced on October 26th .

I hope that if you are considering hip replacement surgery that you would consider trying physical therapy first. PT may not help you completely avoid surgery but can delay it or help ensure a positive outcome. If your doctor doesn't mention PT, ask for it!
