Dr. Tsao, who completed a fellowship in arthritis and adult reconstruction, shares why she feels women should have their hip replacement surgery at a Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Arizona.
Dr. Tsao:
The Banner facilities are very committed to high-level quality of care. You can see that at every step of the process that a patient has to go through to get a hip replacement, from when they are contacted to get their initial lab work, to when they come in for the day of the surgery, to when their pre-operative visit is done.
For hip replacement the hospitals will bring a patient in; have a joint camp; they give them a series of lectures; they give them all this information with physical therapy as well as a physician and surgery and what to expect. They get tours of the hospital and so the fear factor of having a hip replacement is taken away. It becomes a second home and that goes a long way to having a successful hip replacement.
Once you are actually here, from a surgeon’s perspective it’s wonderful. I get all the equipment I need. I get state-of-the-art equipment. I get the personnel that I need and I get absolutely wonderful co-workers to work with. So my atmosphere in the operating room and my atmosphere on the patient’s floor is 100% great. So I have a happy surgeon, I have a happy team, and generally that makes for a happy patient.
And then after surgery we have some of the best physical therapists around, some of the best nurses around. I cannot have any issues with any patient. All I have to do is pick up the phone and I get an immediate response, and when that happens my patients are well taken care of.
The computer systems here are absolutely state-of-the-art. I can get on the computer at home. I can look at an x-ray, a lab test, a chart immediately, and so it goes a long way to getting fast care, good care, immediate care, and when all that comes together you have no choice but to have a ‘wow’ result.

Audrey Tsao received her engineering degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She attended medical school at Cornell University and completed her orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. She returned to Johns Hopkins University to complete a fellowship in Arthritis and Adult reconstruction surgery.

I have had a WOW result! I'll be back to Boswell Memorial Hospital for my second hip replacement(left hip this time) in a few weeks! Great care from all the staff! Joint Club therapy was challenging but effective.Special thanks go out to Gladys and all the special people who took care of me!
