Dr. Barba explains the differences between an orthopedic spine surgeon and a neurosurgeon.

Dr. Barba:
So the difference between an orthopedic spine surgeon and a neurosurgeon are that the neurosurgeons are trained specifically to deal with the problems of the nerves, the spinal cord, and we have training as well with the spine, and a spine surgeon starts with the bones and then sort of follow with the nerves. Any well trained spine surgeon, be they neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon, will have the expertise to take care of your spine problem, and the differences are really only important to the surgeon.

As for your particular case you want to be sure that your surgeon has the experience and, again, the best way to do that is to ask the questions of your primary doc, of the surgeon themselves, and then do your homework on the Internet.
