Dr. Harness discusses the causes of breast cancer.
Dr. Harness, M.D.:
I really wish we knew what causes breast cancer. We do know that not having children is a risk factor. There’s a great concern about the prolonged use of hormone replacement therapy as a causative factor.
Family history is very important, and particularly if you have a family history that involves several close relatives with breast cancer and some relatives with ovarian cancer because in that category you might have the possibility of actually carrying a gene for breast cancer called BRCA-1 or BRCA-2.
