Dr. Wasif shares how women can find breast surgeons who specializes in nipple-sparing mastectomy procedures.
That’s a tough question and a lot of the times you just have to be forthright and ask the surgeon. You have to say, “I have heard of nipple-sparing mastectomy and what is your experience with it? Are you trained to do it and do you offer this?” And I think most people will be quite upfront or they should be upfront with it. If they don’t do it, they should tell you.
You know, it’s not something that you want to ask your surgeon to do for the first time. You don’t really want to be the guinea pig. You want to go somewhere where they have done it and they are comfortable doing it and they can talk to you frankly about what their experience has been like with it.
Here at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, all of the surgeons that do do breast surgery offer nipple-sparing mastectomy. We are all trained to do it and we find that women are very happy to learn that this is an option. In many places that they go to, no one has actually ever spoken to them about this and so the possibility that they could preserve their own nipples just doesn’t exist for them and we find that a lot of them are very happy to learn that this can be done and it can be done well.
