Listen as Paula shares her ovarian cancer experience and how she prevented breast cancer.
Paula:
I went to the gastroenterologist first, told him how I was feeling, and he ordered these two tests that I had done, and they all came back negative. I had the endoscopy and the CAT scan. I was still having pain and some complaints and had gone to my family doctor, and he said, “Well, you just had a clear scan; everything is okay,” and I was still having problems.
I was having what felt like muscle pain abdominally and in my hips, and the whole thing, and I went to a rheumatologist, and he listened to my whole story and ordered another abdominal scan. I had gone to the same place for the scan, and while they were doing the scan, they saw something in my abdominal cavity. They did the pelvic also, and that’s when they found what they thought was cancer.
Then I went back to my family doctor, and he sent me to the oncologist/ gynecologist who did the surgery, and that’s when they found the cancer. About a year after that, I had been with the other doctor, we were talking about having the preventive mastectomies because I had the mutative gene, because it causes breast cancer also, and that’s when I started, it was about a year after I had my first surgery that I started with the mastectomies. They put in prostheses to stretch the muscle. The prosthesis goes behind the muscle in the chest, and that’s when I finally, actually Friday will be two years since I had the permanent implants put in.
