Why Did You Become A Breast Cancer Specialist? - Dr. Harness (VIDEO)

Dr. Harness:
Well, breast cancer, we knew this almost 20-25 years ago, was the paradigm shift in the treatment of all cancers. We used to think of cancers just as locally confined to organs and yet, the patients would succumb to their disease when the cancer would go elsewhere in the body. So, breast cancer was sort of like the space program of cancer because it needs multiple specialists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, all working together in a multi-disciplinary way, but just like with age the kinds of things that have been developed in breast cancer research have huge applicability to all cancers. So it has been a very pioneering and challenging area to work in and frankly I also enjoy the patients. They are wonderful.

About Dr. Harness. M.D.:
Dr. Jay Harness is the Director at St. Joseph Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center. Practicing medicine for 35 years, Dr. Harness specializes in general surgery and medical oncology. Graduating medical school from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he conducting his internship and residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Recognized nationally and internationally for his work in breast and endocrine surgery, Dr. Harness is the immediate past-President of The American Society of Breast Surgeons and is President-elect of Breast Surgery International. Dr. Harness can assist patients in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
