MRI Detects Soft Tissue Damage Affecting Kids' Hearing

(HealthDay News) -- Soft-tissue defects that contribute to hearing loss in children can be detected using MRI, say U.S. researchers who analyzed the medical records of hundreds of children diagnosed with sensorineural (related to sensory nerves) hearing loss.

Radiography, including computed tomography (CT) and X-rays, is often used to look for bone structures problems in children with hearing loss. However, defects in the soft tissue within the bones may also cause hearing loss.

SATURDAY, Sept. 6 (HealthDay News) -- Women who receive an MRI after a new diagnosis of breast cancer not only delay the start of treatment, but they are also more likely to have a mastectomy, as opposed to breast-conserving surgery.

And despite clear evidence of a benefit, MRI use is on the rise, said the authors of a study expected to be Saturday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Breast Cancer Symposium in Washington, D.C.

TUESDAY, May 20 (HealthDay News) -- Sleep deprivation can affect your ability to make sense of what you see, a study by neuroscience researchers at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore shows.

Using MRI to measure blood flow in the brains of volunteers, the researchers found that even after sleep deprivation, participants had periods of near-normal brain function in which they were able to complete tasks quickly. However, periods of slow response and severe declines in visual processing were mixed in with these periods of normalcy.

TUESDAY, May 13 (HealthDay News) -- While undoubtedly lifesaving for many women, mammography is far from perfect. But, undergoing breast ultrasound in addition to standard mammography can find more cancers in high-risk women, particularly those with dense breast tissue, a new study found.
