Heart Failure Drugs Linked to Hip Bone Loss in Older Men TUESDAY, April 15 (HealthDay News) -- Loop diuretics, drugs commonly prescribed to treat heart failure and hypertension, increase the risk of hip bone loss in older men, says a U.S. study. Researchers evaluated 3,269 men, aged 65 and older, who underwent an initial examination between 2000 and 2002, with a follow-up visit an average of 4.6 years later. They collected information about all the medications being taken by the men and checked bone mineral density in the men's hips.

Alison Beaver: New Risk-Fracture Tool for Osteoporosis Screening

The best screening for osteoporosis is done by X-ray, to provide a bone-density reading of specific areas (spine, hip and wrist; the areas most likely affected by osteoporosis). Other tests traditionally given to patients are an ultrasound or CT scan to measure bone density.

A new test, created by the WHO (World Health Organization), is being used to calculate a person's risk of bone fractures. This calculation is done by using the bone-density test results, as well as assessing other risk factors (such as, alcohol and tobacco use, thyroid disease or previous fractures).

We all know to consume calcium for good, strong, healthy bones. Many of us also know that consuming Vitamin D helps our body absorb calcium, which can also promote the development of healthy, strong bones. (Vitamin D can be found in milk, fatty fish, dark leafy vegetables…and sunlight!).

I have severe osteoporosis and I've fractured both femurs since my spinal cord injury. The good news is that I have matching X-rays. The bad news is that I've learned that I am incredibly fragile.
