Dr. Sanderson:
When the Mayo Clinic moved to Arizona I came to Scottsdale in 1987 as chair of the Pulmonary Division and chairman of the Department of Medicine. I am retired now but I have continued to be active in pulmonary activities with the American Lung Association, the American College of Chest Physicians and I am also a member of American College of Physicians and was involved in the International Broncho Esophegealogic Society and the International Society for the Study of Lung Cancer.
COPD is the acronym for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is indeed one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. There have been approximately 12 million Americans diagnosed with the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but there’s another 12 million estimated who have impaired lung function and have not yet been confirmed with that diagnosis.
