It appears that my healthful eating habits are having an effect upon my boss and a few of my colleagues. We're in an office that isn't within walking distance of any decent restaurants. So, many of us bring our lunches. Now, boss is in his mid-60's, has a beer-fed pot belly and loves his BBQ and burgers.
To celebrate meeting a milestone on my project, I brought mango salsa, hummus and quacamole that I made fresh that morning, whole wheat pita and tossed fruit, to lay out for everyone to snack on. One of my colleagues exclaimed that I raised the bar for the office, as the usual office offerings were donuts. My boss wasn't complaining at all about the spread and even went back for seconds and thirds.
After 6 months of teasing me about my eating habits, my boss announced to me this week that he's now watching his waistline and has not been making his usual morning dash to the taco truck (the mobile vendor that comes around twice daily). He also used to make comments about how much water I drink, but now drinks more water than diet sodas - as long as he has some sort of powdered flavoring to add to it.
Now, if I could just get people to get off their duffs and find ways to work in some desk-side exercise...

Oh....you all put me to shame!
In my office, I was the one who was known as "Mikey" (was he from the Life cereal commercials?), because you could hear in the hallway, "Hey, Alison likes it!". So, needless to say, I was not a picky eater and would eat whatever was being offered, usually leftover pizza, cookies and cake from a birthday party.
And, watch out if anyone had breakfast tacos!
In my office, I worked with a woman who was a registered dietitian, and another women who was a marathoner. I'm sure they wondered about my eating habits, but how can you resist temptation?! I guess they found a way, because they both brought in their own lunch. I just thought they were missing out on "the good stuff".
When I am at home, I eat healthier snacks (guacamole, salsa, pita chips, fruit, rice pudding, hot tea), and it is usually the quantity that "gets me". I can not have cookies in the house, or I eat five-a-day (because I'm here all day!), but if there is good-tasting, spicy and healthy snacks, I will eat those instead...so a lot of planning has to go into my weekly meals and snacks.
Any advice on how you plan for healthy snacks (namely, because they are more perishable than their non-healthy counterparts!)

That dish sounds scrumptious. I too am a healthy eater and always bring my lunch to work although, I work in a metropolis with everything within walking distance. I tend to eat less when I bring something from home versus eating out for lunch so that always helps with weight gain.
I actually laughed when you talked about donuts in the office because we have a community candy bowl that we tend to share throughout the office and you can not believe in a setting of over 100 people, how fast that bowl dissipates. I do not participate in the candy eating but I do tend to bring in fresh squash, baby tomatoes and people eat that as well. Nothing compared to the candy dish though. Thanks for sharing.
