It'll be interesting to see whether these graphic images have an effect on smokers picking up the packs. Perhaps the pictures will actually bring home the visual of what goes on inside a smoker's body in a way that simple words cannot.
My father was a smoker most of his life, and we lost him at age 60 to cancer and emphysema. I am asking myself whether warnings this graphic would have changed his mind. The fact is that smokers are addicted to nicotine; many of them want to stop, but find it nearly impossible. Will a nudge as clear as a picture of a tumor help them? Is it possible that one of those images could be "the final straw" for some smokers, and get them to quit?
I'm sure tobacco manufacturers fought this ramping-up of the hazardous warnings they have to put on cigarette packages as it is. They'll surely be watching as closely as anyone to see what the effects are. If it saves some lives, it's very worth it.
