Have you heard about this female college student (majoring in Women's Studies), who is auctioning off her virginity, so that she can pay for college? So far, she's received many offers..some for more than 2.5 million dollars.
I assume most of the women replying to this would be appalled (to say it mildly), so I'll ask a provocative question: do you think there is anything positive that can come from this? If a male wants to part with over a million dollars for a one-night-stand, and a young woman wants to go to college...they both get what they want. (Assume the best scenario: no one gets hurt or infected).
I'm just curious if you think this happens often? This woman does not think she is demeaning herself. I'll keep my opinion to myself, as I am wondering if anyone can think of a reason why this would be a good idea??

She may not be pretty in your eyes, but "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
Not to mention, as women, we are constantly scrutinizing ourselves thinking, "My thighs are too fat," "My hair is too curly," "My butt is too big," ect.
So we do not need more women commenting on the attractiveness of other women when we have the media, magazines, and men doing that for us.
As women, the least we can do is hold our comments on one another's looks, unless we have suggestions on how to make one another more gorgeous!

I'm also wondering about the legalities.....my boyfriend is a law student and brought this up. Is this not the same as prostitution as she is SELLING her virginity. Is this legally allowed in this country?? I don't believe so.
Also, Anon, I don't think that anyone here is "deciding what someone can and can't do with their own body?". We are merely discussing it!
January 27, 2009 - 10:48amAnd in the past, women also sold themselves, just usually in a different way. Woman sell themselves every day. So, you believe that it's ok....and very liberated if you get a lot more money for your body than selling it for $50 at the corner???? It really is the same thing.
This woman can do what she likes, but I personally find it to be a little archaic, except for the sum she is supposedly aquiring.

I am sorry this is such a big deal. Why do any of you get to decide what someone can and can't do with their own body? Its along the lines of your nosy neighbor saying that you can only take showers between 2:00 and 3:00 am, with the lights off. I personally would not appreciate the interference in what I do, or not do.
Some of you said its appalling and self destructive to the woman's rights movement. I believe that it is quite the opposite. 10-20 yrs ago this never would have happened. Now here is a woman with "the balls" to go out and do some thing as drastic as this and she gets shunned for not conforming to societies ideas of womanliness. Sure equal rights, but only if you follow these guidelines. Where have we seen that? The catholic church, the basis of communism, and also during the segregation.
I personally believe in a form of Darwinism. Stupidity is bound to fail, unless supported by the smart. If she wants to do this and gets hurt, or worse then we no longer need to worry about her kids attempting this. On the other hand should she be smart enough to pull this off safely then there is one more smart successful person in the world that just made money on a, quite literally, once in a lifetime offer.
Please understand I write this after being up all night working. If there are problems with what is here I apologize.

As the mother of a 20-something daughter, I'm wondering how I would handle the "news" that she is auctioning her virginity. I think not at all well, and I'd probably hold a family intervention.
So, I wonder what this young woman's family thinks and feels...and what kind of family environment she grew up in that causes her to think that selling her body in this manner is a good idea. This situation reminds me of that Robert Redford/Demi Moore movie in which he buys a night with her from her hubby for $1Mil.

Dear Anon, this freedom to do whatever she wants with her body is one thing, but I am sure this freedom is limited to a handful of societies. So her freedom is dependent on where she lives. If she was from India and lived in India, she would probably be in trouble not just with her parents but with the law and morals of her society.
There are Universal concepts of morality and Cultural Relativism determines how a society will judge or react to an event or action. And even in the most "liberal", "free" societies, there is a concern of what her action will mean to the social group she is a product of. Would other girls immitate her behavior? Is MONEY as a motivator enough to justify someone's action? If so, then ENRON and the whole financial crisis due to unethical behaviors from greedy CEO will also be justified as they exercice their freedoms. Who determines the societal moral compass? I'd like to think that the "village" should be able to have a say!

She is absolutely free to do what she wants with her body... as is society free to comment on it.
There is a HUGE difference between saying something is immoral or will hurt women and wanting to make it illegal.
Also, this goes right to the issue of moral relativism that makes the absolute moral claim that you can't make absolute moral claims.
I heard her interviewed and she had absolutely no concern that she could someday be a mother and how this would impact her kids... she would deal with it then.

DianeP, I hope you are right! Otherwise, it IS a sad day for women's lib. It seems though, that gen y'ers have quite a different take on sex and their bodies. They are very much influenced(in general)by pornography and how mainstream it has become in their lives. In knowing that fact, I find it, sadly, not incredibly surprising that a young woman would do something like this. Afterall, they are often quite comfortable with their boyfriend's use of pornography(demeaning as it is to women), the sexualisaton of music performers(seen MTV recently?)and the attendance of strip clubs. Many young women find all this behaviour glamorous. And I'm not an old fogey! I just see the difference between how 20 somethings think of their bodies and sex and how differently us 30 somethings view ourselves. Look at how popular "girls gone wild is"! How can they find SOOOO many young women who will preform for the camera. To me, the woman selling her virginity and the girl who flashes the camera are both prostituting themselves.
January 14, 2009 - 10:34amI don't think I am such an angel, but I would never have sold any part of myself for any amount of money for any reason.
