Michelle, thanks for the clarification too. I was not aware of E rings. But I am very familiar with dog behavior. I have four at home and just as recently as two nights ago, the seven month old female puppy started humping my son's leg. She soon learned who the alpha female was at home, ME!

Here is what I can share in this regard, humping is considered a sexual action among dogs but it can also be used to signal power and rank. Dogs employ humping as a way of asserting authority, and human legs are a favorite spot. Whether the dog is intact or fixed male and female dogs are likely to engage in this disturbing behavior. The presence of sex hormones could be facilitating the behavior but I doubt it is dictating it. Do you know the age of your friend's dog? It sounds from your posting that it is a show dog therefore not neutered. This stud may be sensing the estrogen but he may actually be threaten by the energy generated by the effect of the hormone on your friend. There are mental aspects to dog's behavior like a conquest afforded by humping which might boost serotonin levels to remain the dominant in the pack. Dogs see humans as part of the pack, they respond to pack behaviors of hunting together, sleeping close by, and ultimately following the leader of the pack. Interesting story!
