A few thoughts for you (beyond seeing a doctor, which it sounds like you would like to try a few other alternatives first):
1) Have you tried purchasing another pillow? That is much cheaper than a bed (!), and helped my back and neck when I got a good pillow that was appropriate for how I sleep (side, back or stomach), for the alignment of my head and spine, etc.
2) Do you have a store nearby that specializes in the back? We have a few of these stores, which sell really expensive items, but you may find a cheaper product there. Or, maybe they can "fit" you for a pillow that you can purchase elsewhere? (remember, these are just sales associates, but they may be a helpful piece to the puzzle).
3) As far as exercises go, I would recommend hatha yoga, as it is a gentle stretching and breathing type conditioning exercise, and focuses on core and back strength.
I had the same problem as you did, and we purchased a new foam bed and new pillow, and I no longer have back pain (unless I stay in bed too long, which is a rare occurrence!) We bought an expensive foam top for our old bed, which did help (cheaper than a new bed, but still expensive).
