There are some very real, horrifying political reasons why certain countries, especially in Sub-Sahara Africa, are literally starving their people to death, a form of genocide. But, it's very difficult for world powers to combat dictatorships that prey on their own people and prevent food from reaching them.

There's also a very real agricultural and environmental reason why crop production numbers are down significantly. Even in the U.S., where some states have been dealing with drought for as long as a decade, and feed corn is becoming less profitable than corn raised for alternative fuel, which sets other negative effects on the food chain in motion, we have to be concerned with our own ability to feed the world as well as ourselves.

There are some organizations teaching women in Third World countries how to become self-sufficient, grow their own food and even cook with solar stoves. We can't all become activists; but, we can certainly support such efforts monetarily. I'm a microlender, for example.
