- There are 2 main types of lymphomas: Hodgkin and all-others are "Non-Hodgkin"
- Lymphomas are cancers of the lymph system (examples include the lymph nodes, lymph tissues that include spleen and bone marrow)
Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas
- There are more than 30 types, and the treatment and survival rates vary with each, depending on the type (usually defined by its location in the body), and many other factors including stage of cancer, treatment, age of patient, etc.
Hodgkin Lymphoma
There are two main types:
-"classical Hodgkin disease" (which has several subtypes), accounts for 95% of cases
- "nodular lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin disease" accounts for the other 5%
"All types of Hodgkin disease are malignant because as they grow they may compress, invade, and destroy normal tissue and spread to other tissues. There is no benign (non-cancerous) form of Hodgkin disease."
The 1-year survival rate for Hodgkin Disease (factoring in all patients after treatment) is about 92%, while the 5-year survival rate is about 85%. Compared to all (30 types) of non-Hodgkin Disease, with an overall 5-year survival rate of 65%. Please know this is comparing apples to oranges, as we are not comparing similar patients (age, health condition, family history), treatment options, stage of cancer when diagnosed, re-occurrence rate, etc...
