Yes, it is normal to have fluctuations in your menstrual cycle. It's actually rare for women to be exactly 28 days (or fill-in your number) every-single cycle.

Our bodies are continuously changing and reacting to environmental influences. Stress, medications and illnesses are some of the more common reasons that a period may be late (when not pregnant), but sometimes it is an unknown reason and just the normal fluctuations in our bodies.

The normal length for a cycle ranges from 21-35 days (from counting the beginning on one period as "day 1"). If the 8-days you were late put you outside of this range, and it continues, you may want to ask your doctor. You can also read How To Know If Your Period is Normal.
