pinkOrchid,

There are many factors that contribute to weight gain, and yes...eating chocolate, cakes, etc. can contribute to excess body weight if you eat them in excess. But, eating anything in excess can contribute to gaining weight! You can still enjoy eating all of the different types of foods, but in moderation.

Same with eating "just" mashed potatoes, as these are not necessarily consideered a health food or low-fat food...potatoes are good for you (again, in moderation), but a baked potato is usually much healthier than mashed potatoes, which are typically made with lots of milk, cream and butter. So, no, I would not go back to eating mashed potatoes!

To eat healthy and lose weight does not mean eating "low-fat" either. Low fat foods are not necessarily healthy, and many pre-packaged foods labeled as "low-fat" are surprisingly high in calories and low in nutrients.

It would be recommended to talk with a Registered Dietitian (R.D.), or we can talk with you about what it means to eat "healthy" (depending on any doctor's restrictions). However, talking with a professional in-person can also help with your weight concern, as 118 pounds is still considered "slim" depending on your height. Do you know how much weight you have gained, and how quickly? Are you concerned the weight gain may be attributed to other health conditions (and not just too much cake?)

Also another important concern is how recently you had your gall bladder removed, as you may want to speak with your doctor about any dietary restrictions that is recommended for you. If you are now able to eat "anything" and enjoy all foods...congratulations! This is a wonderful time to explore the many wonderful foods that you may not have been able to eat prior to surgery. Enjoy your chocolate, cakes, mashed potatoes in moderation, as well as other sweet or savory foods. Meet with a Registered Dietitian who can evaluate your current weight, recommend any food plans based on your current health conditions, as well as help you learn how to eat healthy in an enjoyable and satisfying way. Other considerations include if you like to cook and be creative in the kitchen, if you like to go out-to-eat with family or friends to new restaurants...the possibilities are endless!

Let us know if you have further questions--we can talk more in-depth about healthy eating or help you find an R.D. at your location.
