Although it seems you have gotten some of your information from ASHA, the results from my studies have resulted in finding that straws may actually ASSIST with safely swallowing thickened liquids rather than what you stated. As a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, I have performed approximately 800 modified barium swallow studies, which is a diagnostic test to determine the least restrictive diet for people with feeding problems, and have utilized straws as an assisted device at times. Not all patients can have a straw with thickened liquids, but to say "never use a straw" is too arbitrary. Please research this and edit your article to reflect the appropriateness of the use of straws with thickened liquids. Thank you!
