Do over-the-counter arthritis medicines (anti-inflammatories, etc) give you any relief?
There are a ton of available medicines that treat the pain from arthritis. Here's an about.com page that links to and explains many of them:

Have you asked your doctor about this? I know you say it is arthritic, but if there is numbness there may also be some nerve involvement. Have you ever had back trouble as well?
