Q:

What contraception to use??

I need some help with effective contraception. Nothing is quite right for me.
I don't want to take any hormones any more as I am into healthy living and am convinced that they are NOT healthy for the body. I hate the sponge and anything one puts inside oneself. I have tried them and panicked terribly when I couldn't get it out.
My partner and I both HATE condoms. He feels nothing and I hate the feeling of them inside me.
On the bright side, my period is very regular. We have been using the rhythm method for about six months and it is going well but sometimes I get scared that I might make a mistake and get pregnant. I am in my late thirties and don't want kids. I would somehow manage if I DID get pregnant but really don't want to have to go down that road. I wouldn't want to have to decide on an abortion at my age and wouldn't want to have a baby that wasn't 100% desired. This is a toughie for me. I definitely do not want surgery to remove any of my organs either and my partner doesn't want to have a vasectomy. We just want better options. Please help.

One caution about spermicide: it can cause vaginal or penile irritation, so please know that if one brand or form (suppository, gel, foam, cream) does not work for you, that there are others to try.

Nonoxynol-9 is the most common spermicide used, and has been linked to an increased risk for STIs (sexually transmitted infections). It sounds like you and your partner are monogamous, but I did want to let you know that this is not a good option for people who have multiple partners. (This spermicide can increase risk for STIs because it can irritate the vaginal tissues, creating better entry-way for infection).

Spermicide, when used alone, is not very effective at preventing pregnancy, but it is better than using no birth control.

If you are willing to use them and want the extra security-- I say: go for it!

Thanks for the info, ladies.
Would it be a good idea to use some spermicidal suppositories on the days close to ovulation? I avoid sex completely four days before and after my ovulation day, but how about a little extra security with those spermicides a few days before and after those days I avoid?

Dear Anon,

I just want to reiterate what Susan said-- if a natural birth control method is what you are looking for, then you are already practicing it. For 2 years, I also practiced the rhythm method and I found that it was what worked best for me until we decided to have children.

In combination with the Rhthym Method (which is usually based on calendar dates), you can also opt to add the basal body temperature charting, which involves taking and charting your basal body temp every morning-- in your chart you will notice that your temperature spikes during ovulation. Here is a sample of what it should look like: http://www.babycenter.com/0_sample-basal-body-temperature-cervical-mucus-chart_7252.bc

I strongly believe that these natural methods can be just as effective as birth control pills, condoms, etc.

Best Wishes!
