In pulmonary fibrosis patients, microscopic damage to the alveoli in the lungs causes irreversible scarring of the paper-thin tissue (interstitium) that lines and separates the air sacs. The build up of this scar tissue isn't a normal body process. It can be caused by hundreds of different factors.
