Normal periods are described as:
- bleeding for 3-5 days; no more than 7 days
- bleeding that does not soak more than 1 pad or tampon every hour
You can read more about this information at: EmpowHER: How to Know if your Period is Normal, as well as the links to heavy period sites at the end of the article.

If you are experiencing bleeding that lasts more than 7 days, and are soaking more than one pad or tampon every hour, this is considered menorrhagia ("heavy period") and has specific diagnostic criteria. You can read more about it here: EmpowHER: Menorrhagia.

You can also have heavy periods without having menorrhagia. Have any of your doctors taken your symptoms seriously? Have they performed any tests? It is unlikely that a miscarriage 5 years ago, assuming there were no complications, would cause heavy bleeding now. Many women experience heavy periods, and there are treatment options for you. However, first you need to find a doctor who will talk with you about your symptoms.
