Does degenerative disc disease mean I shouldn't get pregnant?

I just turned 40. I also just got diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in my lower back, which sometimes barely bothers me at all but sometimes causes severe lower back pain.

I'm in physical therapy now to strengthen my core muscles etc. to help with my back.

Does this diagnosis mean that I should not get pregnant?

Hi I'm 28 I find out at 22 that I had DDD which had been causing me pain for years. I have always been worried about having children. I am now 9 months pregnant and it's been a hard road. I refuse to take pain meds so when I'm not at work I usually confine myself to my bed. I have ended up with inflamed hips from the pregnancy which had made it difficult to walk. I am still worried about delivery bc of my back, I was told a few years back that I was over doing it and could end up paralyzed. The one thing that has gotten me through is water stretch therapy and spending time in a pool. I would recommend water therapy to everyone so if your looking for help with pain call local physical therapy offices and see if they offer it. I'm still worried but I know he'll be worth everything in the end.

Hi I'm 28 years old and was diagnosed with degenerate disc disorder at 18... I have had 3 children, which has made it worse. I found out by the chronic pain specialist that having a caesarean section"finished it off".... Basically because they had to cut through muscle and nerve endings its made things worse.... If i haven't shown signs off improvement in 2 years they saying i will be on disability living allowance and permanently on the sick.... They have also said i COULD wake up one morning and be paralyzed from the waist down and never walk again.... I'm so scared.... I have 3 young children and my partner has epilepsy (which is not controlled/managed).Anyone with a positive story or any ideas to help please do.... I don't know what to do thank you.

Hello I'm 26 and have had DDD since I was about 20. The first couple years were horrible. I am 26 now and decided with my husband to try and have a baby even though I have DDD . I'm about 5 months now and from time to time through out the day I have pain in my back and legs. I just started to get severe back and leg pains at night I toss and turn trying to get comfortable. Does anybody know any suggestions for me? I asked my Dr. All she said was try a pillow behind and in between my legs I've tried that and hasn't done much for me? Thanks , netta.

How did the rest of your pregnancy go? How are you now?

Think I am pregnant and have DDD with other issues like stenosis, arthritis and have numbness and at times and burning down my leg. I will definitely come back and advise. I had an ovary removed and my obgyn said she highly does not recommend it. My physio therapist says go for it. I know it will be a tough battle, but labour and delivery won't happen. My obgyn said I will be bed ridden or even hospitalized and c-section would be scheduled. I am 39 and have one child already. I have been thinking a lot about another one. I am unable to work because of my condition, but do still have some ok days. My mother died of an ulcer so I try not to take pills and use other methods of pain management. If more pain after then pain meds still an option for me. There are lots of people who are disabled who have children ...you and your child will learn to adjust. If I am pregnant I will definately keep it. Doing home test in the morning. If negative I think I will try to conceive anyway. Thinking I might be makes me realize how much joy it would bring to my world.

For now Kareful

Hi,
I was diagnosed with severe spondylosis L4-L5 and L5-S1 at age of 12. I had any treatment you can image from pain relief to fysio to injections ... and finaly an operation. I have seen about as many docter as I had treatments. One advice, stay with the doctor that you feel you can trust. Ask for second or third opnions when you think it is necessary. Most important listen to your body.
Once you have it, you'll never be 100% ok. You learn to live with the pain and from time to time you will find yourself pain free.
At 19 I started to show signs of paralysis. Two years later I needed an operation to avoid permanent paralysis. Waking up from surgery was the best day ever. The pain was gone. After more fysio to strengthen my muscels I'm ok now without medicine. I still have bad days but I listen better to my body and I take a break when I need to.
Now I'm 27 and married and yes we want a child. I would love to be a mother but I choose not to get pregnant myself. We decided to choose a surrogate mother. I fought so hard to be where I am now that I want to enjoy it as long as I can. A pregnancy can be wonderfull but you only have one back, one life, take care of it.
Never stop talking to your doctor, explain your concerns and thoughts.
Keep in mind we are a lot stronger than we think we are but not unbreakable.

I had extreme back pain during and after my first pregnancy. I finally was diagnosed a few years later, after becoming pregnant again, with DDD. It has flared up with each pregnancy and I have constant pain during it and then after for about 1-1.5 years due to the demand of caring for a baby. I have been able to become pretty pain free around the time my kids have turned 18 months with chiropractic and physical therapy. The best thing that has helped, oddly enough, has been wrapping a towel around a rolling pin and laying directly over it and rolling on top of it. I want more kids but am nervous about making my back worse. At the same time, I’m not sure it’s any worse after my second child than my first child, but still the risk is what scares me.

Hi I am 23 years old and have a 1 1/2 year old daughter. I just got diagnosed with DDD and my fiance also has spondolitis, which is a very severe diease. We want another baby and was planning on it in a few years. However with both having the health problems we have we are thinking about it sooner. If anyone can give me information and advice if we should have another one right now or wait a few years. Our daughter is almost 2 and starting to talk and be more active. please and thank you
