Anon - You're right, there is no need to panic, but there is a need to regularly check to be sure the IUD is still in place because even a partially expelled IUD can lead to pregnancy.

Some IUDs have information on the package insert about how long the manufacturer recommends they can be left in. In general, copper IUDs are often left in for ten or more years. Also, to continue contraceptive protection for women in menopause, the IUD should be removed one year after periods stop, or later.
