Accidently crushed my birth control pill

I accidently crushed my birth control pill as I was taking it out of its package tonight. I got as much of it as I could and took it but I am worried my protection is now compromised. Should I be worried?

Thanks

Hi, I have just started to go on the pill taking Estelle 35ED. However i have trouble swallowing tablets so I have been letting the pills dissolve in my mouth a little and when its nearly all gone I have a drink of coffee. Is that ok? Will they still work? I am only using it to clear up my face and get rid of my pimples and acne.

GREAT NEWS, tmc. Thank you for the update. If you are ever concerned about medications, your local Pharmacist will always be the helpful person to contact since they have your prescription, know how long you have been on the medication, etc.

I am glad you updated us. Don't forget to take precautions for the next 7 days though. It doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Hello,

I just called the pharmacist and he said as long as I took the entire pill I should be fine. Plan B can be taken as an extra precaution but as long as most of the pill is ingested even though crushed it will still be effective.

Hi tmc,

You should be fine since you ingested most of the pill but as a precaution, use a back-up method as Susan explained above. Since you had unprotected sex a few days ago, sperm can live inside a woman for 3 to 5 days, so you will have to wait and see if you miss a period. Unfortunately, thats the best answer under the situation.

I would talk to your local pharmacist before taking the Plan B pill. Explain the situation and your concern to him/her and ask if it is necessary or recommended.

Can you keep us updated?

Hi Susan,

I feel that I got most of the pill and ingested at least 90% of it though it was crushed. Last night I started my second week of active pills and the pill I crushed was the first pill of the second week. I will use a back up method however for the next week just to be safe.

Additionally, am I covered up for the days that I did not use protection? For example... I had unprotected sex on Wednesday night but have been taking my pills religiously and the only potential mis-use was when the pill crushed on last night (Friday). Should I look into Plan-B or should I be fine in that regard?

Thank you so much for your help.
