Anon - When we learn information about our periods, most of us are taught that they go in these regular cycles and we expect that for ourselves. Many women, however, encounter exactly the types of fluctuations you have experienced, and sometimes even more of them. From your comments it sounds like you are working closely with your doctor, and that he/she is monitoring your health, which is the right thing to do. You may be just experience some shifts in hormonal patterns but if you're not you have the benefit of medical support to figure out what else this could be. I know you are worried and concerned, but you are doing all the right things.
